Zion-Benton Township High School evaluated their existing natatorium and decided to construct a new pool within the existing space. Along with a new building, the plan was also to reconstruct the existing natatorium for other much-needed school functions.
Part of the challenge was that the existing structure, built in the 1970s, was octagon-shaped and required a unique design. A new natatorium was designed successfully despite the odd shape of the space.
The new 27,500 sq. ft. natatorium features an eight-lane, 25-meter competition pool with an attached two-board diving well and a two-lane practice and teaching pool. Support spaces include men’s and women’s team locker rooms, extensive storage area, a pool manager’s office, mechanical spaces, and gallery-level seating for 400 spectators.
