In October 2024, Counsilman-Hunsaker was hired by FBT Architects to assess the condition of the six-lane lap pool at New Mexico Highlands University, which was not operational at the time of the site visit. The University sought to determine the pool’s viability for future use and identify the necessary repairs to bring it back into operation.
The pool, originally built in 1966, has remained functional through the years with dedicated maintenance. However, the pool’s physical structure and mechanical systems are showing signs of aging. Notably, a significant crack was found at the shallow end, and a leak in the pool’s below-grade piping was identified. Although the mechanical and piping systems could not be fully observed, several components were flagged for immediate replacement. Given the pool’s 60-year history, Counsilman-Hunsaker recommended a strategic plan for either a full renovation or replacement to ensure the facility meets the University's long-term goals for safe and sustainable aquatic services.
